IPTV on a Fire TV Stick UK: Step-by-Step

British IPTV Team 5 min

How to install IPTV on a Firestick in the UK: add a compatible player app, allow installs from outside the app store if the player needs it, open the player and enter the Xtream Codes or M3U details you received. The whole job takes around fifteen minutes. This guide explains each step and what to do when the stick says the app cannot be installed.

In short

  1. Update the stick and connect it to your network.
  2. Install a compatible player, from the Amazon Appstore if it is listed there, or from the publisher's own site with the Downloader app.
  3. Open the player, choose Xtream Codes or M3U, and enter your details.
  4. Set the time zone and the programme guide, then switch the install setting back off.
  5. Fire TV is made by Amazon, and British IPTV is not connected with Amazon.

Which Fire TV devices work

Most current Fire TV Stick models, and the Fire TV Cube, will run IPTV players. A 4K picture needs a 4K model, while an older stick has less memory and can slow down with a long channel list. Wherever the stick sits, a cable through an Ethernet adapter gives a steadier picture than Wi-Fi.

Step 1: Update and connect

From the home screen choose Settings, then My Fire TV, then About, and check for system updates. Plug the stick into the wall rather than the TV's USB port, which may not supply enough power. Connect to your 5 GHz Wi-Fi network if the router is close, or use an Ethernet adapter. Wi-Fi or Ethernet and speed explains the difference.

Step 2: Install a player

Search the Amazon Appstore for a compatible player such as IPTV Smarters Pro or TiviMate (see Smarters or TiviMate for a comparison). These apps belong to their own publishers. If the player you want is in the store, install it there and skip to Step 3. If it is not, you can install it from its publisher using the Downloader app.

Installing from outside the store

  1. Install the Downloader app from the Amazon Appstore.
  2. Go to Settings, My Fire TV, Developer options, and open Install unknown apps. Allow Downloader to install. On some versions the setting is called Apps from Unknown Sources.
  3. Open Downloader and type in the address given on the player publisher's own website. Type it carefully; one wrong character leads somewhere else.
  4. Download the file when prompted and choose Install.
  5. When it finishes, go back to Install unknown apps and switch Downloader off again.

Only install an app from a source you can name. A file from a forum link or a stranger's message is a risk to your device and your accounts; buying IPTV safely explains the risks.

Step 3: Enter your log-in

Open the player and pick the log-in type. For Xtream Codes, enter the server address, username and password exactly as sent. For M3U, paste the playlist link. The article M3U, Xtream Codes or MAC explains which to choose. If you ordered Premium, you use the AromaOtt player app instead; follow its own instructions at aromaott.com and check there which devices it supports. Typing on the remote is slow, so use the Fire TV phone app as a keyboard if you can.

Step 4: Set the time zone and the guide

Open the player's settings and look for the time zone or EPG offset. In the UK the guide should follow UK time, and if you are abroad, the local time. If the guide shows no information, IPTV EPG not working lists the fixes.

Fixing the common problems

  • "Your Fire TV Stick doesn't allow installs from unknown sources." The install setting for Downloader is off. Switch it on for Step 2 and off again afterwards.
  • "App not installed." Usually not enough storage. Uninstall apps you do not use, then try again.
  • The app disappears or stops opening. Reinstall it from the publisher, and check storage and updates.
  • The picture freezes. Use Ethernet, restart the stick, and clear the app's cache. The buffering and freezing guide puts the checks in order.
  • A wrong log-in message. Re-enter the details without trailing spaces, and ask support to check the account.

Using your phone as a keyboard

Typing a long server address with the arrow keys is slow. The Fire TV app for phones works as a remote and as a keyboard, so you can type on your phone and the text appears on the TV. Pair it from the app, then tap into any text field on the TV. Copying your log-in details from your order message and pasting them avoids mistakes that a remote invites, such as a transposed letter.

Before you rely on it

Run a short test before an evening you care about. Open three or four channels you expect to watch, check that the programme guide times match your clock, try a pause and a rewind on a channel that supports it, and leave one channel running for twenty minutes to see whether it holds. If something misbehaves, note the channel, the time and what you saw, because that is what support needs. A test run beats finding a problem at the start of a match.

Keeping the stick tidy

Restart it from time to time by unplugging it for a few seconds. Remove apps you no longer use. Keep the system updated, but not on the evening of something you want to watch. Switch the developer option off when you have finished, so that nothing can install without you noticing.

Amazon and British IPTV

The Fire TV name belongs to Amazon, which has no link with British IPTV; no Fire TV devices are sold here. For plans, see the Fire TV Stick page.
